Canadian graphic novelist Bryan Lee O'Malley is having a very good year. Not only are his Scott Pilgrim books being turned into a feature film by director Edgar Wright (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), but premiere game studio Ubisoft Montreal is working on a video game adaptation. The company says that his stories, in which out-of-work 22 year-old Scott Pilgrim must battle a series of evil ex-boyfriends in order to claim the heart of his new crush, Ramona Rollerblades, brings with it the natural escalation used for video game design and that the gang in Montreal are huge and very excited fans.
"Scott Pilgrim is a special property, one that is both nostalgic and completely original" says Christian Salomon, vice president of Worldwide Licensing at Ubisoft. "The game will provide a fun and unique experience to players and combine all the important elements seen in the film—action, romance, irreverent pop culture references and rock-n-roll.”
Of Bryan Lee O'Malley himself is of the video game generation and truly the kind of artist who can appreciate what this deal means.
"Video games have been a huge influence on the characters and world of Scott Pilgrim," he says. "As a gamer myself, it is a true pleasure to work closely with the talented team at Ubisoft to bring Scott to life on video game screens worldwide."
