Micro-blogging network Twitter.com found itself having to raise it's defenses early this morning as it became the target of a denial-of-service attack. Assaulted by wave after wave of illegitimate network traffic, to the point that Twitter's servers could no longer keep up, the company's website and service went down today for several hours. Although the outage kept all Twitter users from accessing their accounts, it didn't effect the company's Status Page where they have been posting updates on the attack and its consequences. Although the attack has been thwarted and Twitter service is currently up and running, there are still issues impacting Twitter's related services such as photo-sharing site Twitpic.com. Today's disruption is still causing time-outs with services like Twitpic that use the company's API. In short, Twitter users can currently post tweets through Twitter.com, but may suffer difficulties using third-party clients and services to post messages, pictures, videos, and audio clips.
