In response to the aid efforts underway to help those dealing with the aftermath of a Typhoon and flooding in the Philippines, Rogers has announced a system for Red Cross Donations through text messaging which they will match with their own funds, plus efforts to help Canadians maintain contact with friends and family in the area, including offering free access to their Filipino channels GMA Pinoy TV and Filipino TV until further notice. Here's the details:
Canadian Red Cross International Disaster Relief Fund
Both Rogers and Fido customers can make a $5 donation by sending the text message "HELP" to short code 733. Rogers will also match up to $20,000 of these donations. According to the Red Cross, this is the first time Canadians will have been able to make donations through text messaging.
Free Filipino Television
Rogers Digital Cable Television customers in Ontario can now access GMA Pinoy TV (Channel 870), which offers 24-hour broadcasting and Filipino TV (Channel 869), which delivers four different news programs the same time they air in the Philippines for free.
“Our heartfelt sympathies and concern go out to everyone who is affected by the natural disasters and devastation in Asia-Pacific,” says Rob Bruce, President of Communications, Rogers Communications.
