Not due for release here in Canada until October, Kodak’s Zi8 is a drastic improvement over their first attempt at a HD pocket camcorder, the Zi6. They’ve upgraded the resolution to 1080p, adding a much-needed image stabilization, included a still 5 MP camera function for 16:9 widescreen photos, and face-tracking, all assembled into a sleeker, more attractive design.

I’ve only just started performing tests and already the results are impressive. One of the features that distinguishes Kodak’s models from others is the ability to switch the camera from a normal fixed focus length to a macro mode intended for close-up recording. As you can see in my test video below, the improvements now make this feature worth using.

As with the first model, the Zi8 records onto SD/SDHC memory cards (sold separately) with support for up to 32 GB. There’s some internal memory for taking photos, but as a camcorder its limited to memory cards. A built-in USB connector makes it convenient to sync with your computer and upgraded ArcSoft Media Impression software (PC and Mac) allows for some sophisticated editing, including visual effects and the option to grab still frames to be used as photos. In addition to YouTube, there’s the option to directly upload your clips to Facebook and Vimeo.

It includes a removable, lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack, listed as good for 10 hours of HD recording, although that varies based on whether you’re shooting in 720 HD at 32 fps or 1080p at 30 fps.

A nice surprise is the inclusion of an HDMI to HDMI mini cable in the box, something you don’t see often. This can be used to connect the camera to your HDTV for playback and so far the experience, something the Zi8 is actually good at.

The zoom is still an issue. The camera jerks, taking halting steps as you move in, providing little use during recording. You’re best to set your zoom before you start making your film and then leave it. With only a 4X digital zoom, it’s quite limited in use anyway, move in too close and the image will take on a lot of image noise, which is a shame.

I still have to put in some more time on the Zi8 to complete my review and with the release date set for over a month away I must move on to other items, but at first blush, it’s clear there’s some potential here.
