Legacy

It's Friday and that means its time to lock you away inside one of the many puzzle rooms scattered across the internet. Can you find your way out in time to enjoy the weekend?

This week I offer you an escape that is entirely made of sound. BBC Scotland's Legacy is an audio adventure intended to be played using headphones and a set of basic keyboard commands. There's a rudimentary visual made up of walls and an arrow in the dark should you need it, but the focus of the game is to listen to the sounds of the character's movements to help you find secret items, doors to other chambers, and interact with puzzles. Since we are so used to exploring our environments, this can be quite a frustrating game at first, but I wanted to include it here in this series because it's such an original take on the genre and well, BBC Scotland is quite good at doing radio dramas. Here you play Harry who joins his twin sister Jules in cleaning out the old, dark attic belonging to their Aunt Rose who has just passed. Rose had a thing for puzzles and as they poke around in the dark they uncover a series of her intriguing mysteries and set out to solve them. Tricky, yes, but if you can embrace the auditory sense of space, it's rewarding too.
