UPDATE: You can watch the restored 2010 Edition of Metropolis in the embedded video below.

When Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece, Metropolis, was first shown in 1927, the reaction wasn't initially favourable and nearly an hour of footage was removed before it went into distribution and became the culturally resonant film it is today. It's astounding that the film's futuristic take on on the world still holds up as being, well, futuristic, and the thought that a significant amount of Lang's incredible vision was lost simply because it wasn't appreciated in time is something film lovers have lamented for decades. However, a print recently discovered in a film archive in Argentina has delivered much of the missing footage to restorationists who have painfully reassembled the original film over the past two years. Later today, through spectacular public events being held in Frankfurt and Berlin in Germany, the completed version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis will be given its premiere before being released on DVD and Blu-ray later this year.

The Berlin Orchestra will accompany the silent film during a live broadcast that will include the film being projected at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin as well as broadcasted in HD through the ARTE channel and streamed online for markets in Germany and France.

Film Critic Roger Ebert has been hunting down the details and is providing up-to-date details on how the film will be made available to those interested through his blog here:

He writes:

"My correspondent Larry J. Kolb writes: "Since I speak German, I called the press officer of the festival in Berlin to get details about the streaming. It begins at 8:15 PM, Europe time, on the 12th. At first, the streaming will cover a bit of ceremony, introductory speech, etc. The actual film is scheduled to start playing at 8:40 PM. Germany is 7 hours ahead of Chicago, so that means the actual film is scheduled to start streaming at 1:40 PM CST, Chicago time.""

For French audiences the film will be streamed online at this link

For German audiences the film will be streamed online at this link and here

You can find more information on the restoration at the F. W. Murnau foundation at Metropolis2710.de

Here's a live feed of the screening below:

Before the film starts there will be some ceremonies and discussion of Lang's work and the restoration.

Both will be offered in German and French. There's no English broadcast, but being a silent film it won't matter too greatly.
