The exchange of flowers, chocolates, and fortune cookies across profile walls will come to a halt on August 1st. Facebook has decided to close down their Gift Shop and end a feature that allowed users to purchase virtual treats for each other. In an announcement on the
Facebook Blog, the reason for the closure is cited as the need to focus instead on improving other features, although it's hard to ignore the dwindling popularity of the gifts, which were cute and novel when they first appeared in 2007, but as the years have passed, there's been an increase in complaints about their presence. Facebook's announcement has received almost 3,000 "likes" from users approving the change. Product manager Jared Morgenstern notes that the feature played an important role in establishing Facebook Credits, a financial system that allows users to purchase special features and games, a business that has grown and will continue for the social network. In it's place, Morgenstern promises new ideas similar to their features around photos, comments, news feeds, and the "like" button.
