Augmented Reality is a technology that continues to grow in popularity and purpose. Researchers at Georgia Tech in Atlanta have developed a mobile video game that uses a cellphone's built-in camera with a large map laid out on a table. In "ARhrrrr" players hover over the table, pointing their cellphone cameras at the map. On the mobile screen the map comes alive as a 3D city, complete with roaming pedestrians and wandering zombies. You take on the role of a protector riding in a helicopter and must shoot the zombies to clear a path to safety for innocent civilians.

Moving through the city is as easy as moving yourself about the table and pointing the camera from different angles. The zombies in turn can attack you back by tossing infected organs at your chopper. To access NVIDIA's graphics capabilities, the team has used Nokia's Tecra handset (not available here in Canada) to deliver lighting effects and atmosphere. My favorite part is the Skittles. You can place the candy onto the map itself and when you point the camera at them, they enter the game as bombs for you to shoot and trigger virtual explosions as a way to manage zombie swarms. Read more about the project here and here's a must-see video of the game in action.
