Two major features of Apple's iCloud service are now available in Canada, a month after their initial launch in the United States. iTunes Match promsies to scan your music library and provide high quality replacements for songs not purchased from the iTunes Store, while TV In The Cloud allows users to re-download television shows bought previously and share them across all devices owned. Both services aim to make it easier for consumers to abandon the world of CDs and DVDs in favour of digital downloads.
iTunes Match comes at an annual price of $27.99 CAN. It's a service that makes it easier to manage your music library across your different devices while at the same time upgrading the quality of songs that may need it. The idea is that you can upload all of your songs to Apple's iCloud service so that you can then download them onto your other devices. During the process, Apple will scan your library for any song of inferior quality that you may have collected from ripping CDs or aquiring music from other sources. As long as the song it discovers has a matching entry in the iTunes music store, Apple will let you download or stream a DRM-free, 256 kbps, AAC encoded duplicate. If it can't find a matching entry, it will still upload the file so you can move copies to your other devices.
There is a catch. Your library for transfer/replacement is limited to just 25,000 songs (this does not count the tracks you've bought from iTunes proper) and you can only use the feature across ten devices. If you stop paying the annual $27.99 fee, you merely lose access to the files stored online, but can continue to use any of the upgraded songs downloaded through the service.
The idea is to make it so that your iTunes music library is identical across all your Apple devices and Windows computers.
TV In The Cloud is included in the regular cost of buying content from the iTunes store and follows what has already been offered for apps, books, and music. When you buy an episode of a television show from the iTunes Store, you can download additional copies of it onto your other Apple devices and, should you delete it by accident, re-download it as needed. Those who own an Apple TV can now use it to buy shows (instead of just renting them) for use on other Apple devices.
