With the release of the BlackBerry Bold, Rogers has decided to extend their $30 6GB special offer, originally introduced with the launch of the iPhone 3G, until the end of September. The special rate is available to all 3G-enabled smartphones. The company also briefed me today on a set of findings from their own internal research into data usage of Canadian iPhone 3G users and the new rates and promotions they will be introducing beginning October 1st.
From their own research, they offer the following statistics:
1.2% of iPhone 3G customers used more than 1GB in the first four weeks
95% of iPhone 3G customers used less than 500 MB
91.2% of iPhone 3G customers used less than 200MB in four weeks
Based on those results, Rogers will introduce new rates that will be applicable to all data devices, including BlackBerries, smartphones, and Air cards, beginning October 1st.
They are as follows:
$15 for 2MB (essentially an email plan)
$25 for 500 MB
$30 for 1GB
$60 for 3GB and $80 for 8GB
Their research also revealed that many customers are worried about going over their limit and want a method to monitor their data usage as it will be applied to their bill. In response, Rogers is introducing three "peace of mind" solutions:
1." Freedom of Data / mobile internet and email" - 3 months unlimited data usage will be included when you subscribe to give you time to see your usage and learn what your best plan would be.
2. Free incoming SMS 'data alerts' that tell you before, when and after you reach your data threshold bucket so you know your usage and can choose to limit your usage or change your plan. This was a feature introduced with the iPhone 3G, but will now be applied to other applicable data devices too.
3. $100 maximum - ultimate cost certainty for customers on any data plan - regardless of device, your MSF and additional data overage would max at $100.
