It was the only time that the entire audience erupted in cheers, as VIPs and journalists, normally too polite or too professional to join in the adulation voiced by fans and developers that mark Apple's keynote shows, broke their demeanor and joined in when Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that their iPhone handset would be going on sale in 70 countries. 22 countries will be among the first wave to launch the new iPhone model, which is equipped with 3G data speeds and real GPS-based location. Canada is among that first wave with Rogers joining other networks in offering the device for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB . The 16 GB model will be available in a choice of black or white. It's a price that Apple has set for their iPhones in all markets, same price, across the board. On July 11th, the iPhone will hit stores in Canada and will be supported by the release of new software that adds several new tweaks including support for push e-mail through ActiveSync and the ability to now save an image sent as an e-mail attachment. July will also see the launch of a new Apps Store that will offer a wide selection of new software applications from a number of third-party developers, from video games to social networking, education to online auctions.

Amongst the shock of the new lower price tag (the first iPhone sold for $599) is the new battery life. 24 hours for audio, 7 hours for video, and 5 hours of talk time using 3G. The new 3G data network connection promises faster website loading and e-mail attachment downloads. In one demonstration performed at today's announcement, the new iPhone loaded a complicated website with images in 21 seconds compared to almost a minute on the older iPhone and several minutes on competing devices.

in Canada the new iPhone will be running on Rogers' High Speed Paket Access (HSPA) wireless network, which will be available in "urban centres" across the country from Vancouver to Halifax, covering more than 60 percent of the population. Outside of those areas, the new iPhone will contnue to work with GSM/EDGE data connections.

Note: Rogers plans to offer more details on exact rate plans later on.
