GeniGeni takes the idea of a social community website like MySpace or Friendster and applies it to building your own genealogy project. You can sign up for a free profile, create the beginning of your own family tree, and then send out e-mail invites to family members and distant relatives to log in and add details, photos, and anecdotal stories/comments to the parts of the family tree they are familiar with. Each person who accepts your invite and joins in the tree-building will have a profile of their own where they can view their own version of the tree that places their immediate family at the top. Unlike with other social websites, your information here is completely private. The only people that can search for you are those you've sent an invite to. Geni has just been launched as as such is considered to be in a Beta phase, meaning it's still a work-in-progress and new features will be added over time. It will be especially interesting to see what happens if it becomes popular enough that Geni could potentially connect many family trees up to each other. Geni is a the creation of a group of former PayPal, Yahoo! Groups, eBay, and Tribe employees.
