It's Day 2 of Gadget Week on Canada AM and we're looking at portable gadgets. Here's my recommendations in cellphones, MP3 players, digital camcorders and still cameras.
Cellphones
Three things - Simple. Stylish. Easy to use.
That's what these two cellphones offer:
Motorola KRZR
$200 3 year from Telus

Just launched this week, the KRZR offers up the same, popular featuresand functionality of the RAZR but trades in the now-annoying look for aclamshell formfactor that's long, slender, and not-so-thin. It has thelook and feel of a Lincoln town car or a corporate jet. Still elegant, but not-so-trendy.1.3 Megapixel camera, bluetooth, high-speed wireless, SD card slot, USBport, etc.
LG Chocolate TG800
Fido (CDMA) edition
$200 2 year Fido

Also just launched, this model is very similar to the Chocolate that waslaunched through Telus over a month ago. Subtle differences include athinner design, a checker board pattern on the keypad, and the absenceof a memroy card slot for mp3s. It's still a "chocolate" slider phone, with touch-senstive controls and rich brown colour. I've been using thismodel for over two weeks now and despite not buying into the hype, Ifind it to be a great choice just as a simple cellphone.
MP3 Players
In Christmas red, there's the iPod nano we've all come to know well. This special edition is part of Bono's Global Fund Project and for everyred nano sold, $10 US will go to the fund. (Price - $230)

iPod Shuffle
$90
Now the world's smallest mp3 player, the new Shuffle comes in the formof a small clip, making it easy to wear. Still offering the same 1GBstorage (240 songs), but with the new edition earbuds and USB dock. It'sthe ideal solution for parents buying on a budget for their kids.

Creative Zen V
1 GB - $110
2 GB - $150

A fantastic ipod alternative, this cute little player has a cutting edgeOLED screen, has a voice recorder, line-in recording, support forphotos, 15 hours battery, and includes both a lanyard and velvet pouch. Can be used to buy songs from Puretracks.
Camcorders
Sony's Handycams offers the ideal balance. They have quality Carl Zeisslens, are designed with consumer friendly controls, and offer a small, attractive gadget feel and look.
Sony Handycam DCR-H3C6
$480

For the family on the budget I recommend looking at a Camcorder thatuses MiniDV tapes. Yes, tapes, the same ones used to recordHigh-Definition videos in Sony's first HD camcorder. As old as thetechnology is, it's image quality is still better than DVDs and so atthe mid price range, tape is king. This widescreen model is an excellentchoice for home videos and beginners.
Sony Handycam DCR-DVD505
$1,200

By contrast, a comparable version using DVD-R discs will run you over athousand dollars. This model is equipped with Sony's CMOS imaging sensorans so you get great recording quality along with the usability of DVDdiscs for editing and playback in DVD players.
Digital Cameras
The newest feature to look into this year is Image Stabilization.Several brands - Panasonic, Samsung, and Canon are offering this and itfinally, finally tackles the one big drawback with digital photography -shaky pictures.
Canon Powershot SD 800 IS
$550

The newest Canon features an internal gyroscope around the lens thatcompensates for your shaky hands to keep it level during the shot. Addthis to the camera's 7.1 Megapixels, 3.8x optical zoom, opticalviewfinder, 1.7 fps continuous shooting mode, and the great photos itproduces and this is a fine camera to give.
