Hands-down the #1-selling theme for LEGO, these are all-new sets. LEGO says this series hits with three different demographics; kids, teenagers, and adult collectors. Adult collectors make up 25% of LEGO's business now.  The emphasis here is on new ships with high detail, little compartments and working features, plus unique minifig designs. The main request they get is for more and more minifigs.
