It's not often we can associate fun with a financial institution, but PNC has done just that with a holiday model train adventure. each year the company studies the inflation rate for all the items mentioned in the Twelve Days of Christmas, you know, turtle doves, french hens, maids a' milking and the like. As you ride their online train you'll be taken through a number of puzzles and games that express the results from that study. The impressive visuals alone make it worth the ride.

Mitoza

The opening concept is an intriguing one. You have a seed. Do you plant it or feed it to a bird? Two paths that lead to very different consequences. Mitoza is a quick, fun distraction of a game where you play through rounds of choices of such choices and as you move deeper along your chosen path you'll find the results get stranger and stranger. I'm quite fond of the flying elephants myself. Created by Gal. See how many endings you can unlock.  [More]

Thrill of the CatchFeel like fishing? Discovery Education has put together a fantastic online fishing game where you can not only hit the lake and catch a wide variety of fish, but you can even create and name your very own to add to the population. Just pick a spot on the lake, choose your bait, and get ready to click a lot with your mouse when one comes on the line. If you pick up trash by accident there's a recycle box to keep the lake clean and if you register you can keep a record of your catches. The fun part is finding out the names of the fish as each one is created by a previous visitor. You can make your own and even check in on it later to feed it. Designed for kids of all ages, the idea is to educate players on food chains, habitat, and fishing.  [More]

Eyemaze Grow Valley

If you've never played an Eyemaze Grow puzzle you're in for a treat with Grow Valley. The latest entry in the popular online series asks you to oversee the development of a new civilization by deciding what steps are the most important to take in its growth. Is it engineering and architecture? How about life sciences or electricity? Perhaps math and chemistry? For each area there's a tile. You play by simply choosing a tile and watching your new civilization grow. The order of the tiles you choose will determine it's growth. Choosing one tile early can help another tile in your list develop better or faster, so the combinations can often seem endless. Each time you play you'll get different results while the goal is to work out the right order to allow all the stages to develop to their greatest potential. Do that and you'll unlock the best ending, which is always what makes the Grow puzzles so rewarding.  [More]

Dismantle Toaster

The latest entry in the dismantle puzzle series is here and it's the one I've been waiting for - The Toaster. Most of the people I've met who enjoy a healthy mechanical curiosity have taken apart their toaster, it's usually that or a household fan, one of the two. In this puzzle your task is to get inside the device armed with nothing more than a screwdriver. While some aspects are the same as a real toaster, to give it more the sense of a game there are built-in puzzles, combination locks, etc. to challenge your problem-solving skills. [More]

E7

Wonderfully atmospheric and original in concept, E7 challenges you to save the Earth from a dark, hostile planet harbouring a bomb set for delivery to our home. Landing in a rocket, your task is to control a small rover, find the bomb and deactivate it. Caught in the torrent of night, you must travel under the light of the moon and traverse a spongy-like ground, using its elastic properties to propel you over mountains, into enemy robots, and explore nooks and crannies to find healing fire flies. Very, very creative, make sure to give it a try.  [More]

Halo 2600

Yes, the biggest selling game on the Atari 2600 was indeed Halo and it's back. Alright, that's not true, it was Pac-Man, but thanks to Ed Fries we can now pretend that's true and mix a little nostalgia for 80's with the very beginning of the Xbox. Fries has created a version of Microsoft's top franchise for the Atari 2600 that is pitch perfect. It's not a mash-up or a quick gag, there are 64 screens to make your way through. The game captures all the core elements of Halo's look, music, and gameplay but through the limitations of the cartridge-based system from late 70's and early 80's. There's a flash version you can play here for free (arrow keys to move, spacebar to shoot, grab the gun above), but if you still have your Atari 2600 kicking around AtariAge.com has started manufacturing actual cartridges with the game loaded and will soon post a link to a waiting list for availability. If you have an emulator you can download the game here[More]

Hummingbird Mind

Some days it's hard to settle down to work. It's more than just a case or procrastination, sometimes the mind has need to wander. Such is the premise of Hummingbird Mind, an interactive novella in which you find yourself sitting at your computer, unable to get any work done, only to change your focus to other tasks in hopes of shaking away the feeling, but as you wander about a home office or take a walk to the local park, your mind begins to wander and strange things begin to happen. It's a nice piece of distraction from Cardboard Computer that reminds me of the text adventures of old, in a very good way. [More]
