For their latest edition of the popular game Monopoly, Hasbro held a vote across the internet, asking fans to choose which international cities would replace the names of all the properties. Votes were cast from around the world, but Canadians, known for their passion for board games, were active in record numbers winning spots for three cities; Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. 5.6 milion votes were cast online to chose amongst 70 different cities. Which city received the most votes online? Montreal and it has been given the coveted Park Place slot. To celebrate, Hasbro held launch events today in Vancouver, Montreal, and here in Toronto where I attended the festivities at Ontario Place. They had a giant-sized version of the board on display, surrounded by small tents representing various cities from the board along with performers to match. There was a living statue at the Athens tent, dancers performing for Beijing, a mime to represent Paris, a yoga instructor for Vancouver, and the Queen herself to hold court at the London tent. Kids were treated to free board pieces and a chance to meet Mr. Monopoly himself.
Monopoly Here And Now: The World Edition will arrive in stores on August 26th and in addition to listing international cities, the board will also feature cultural events including Carnival in Rio De Janiero and St. Patrick's Day in Dublin.
