To mark the arrival of the Samsung Instinct into stores today for their network, Telus held a small promotional event at College Park here in Toronto. The public was invited to visit and try their hand at using a giant slingshot to try and fire an old cellphone at a recycling bin. While everyone was allowed one shot (with successful hits awarding a chance to draw for either a water bottle or an Instinct phone), those who brought an old phone with them to donate to Telus' recycling program were given extra tries at the slingshot. For every old phone brought in, Telus will also pay to have a tree planted through Tree Canada.

Unfortunately they wouldn't let anyone use the slingshot on their own used phones, those that were donated had to be kept in good condition for recycling. Instead they provided a collection of out-dated Samsung phones for participants to use, and although they had Samsung Instincts on-hand for people to test out, they would not let anyone "launch' one with the slingshot either. Those who didn't hit the recycling bin, or didn't want to try out the slingshot were given scratch cards for a chance towards winning an Instinct phone.

I popped by only for a few minutes and they had a steady stream of people from all walks of life stepping up to give it a go.

After each shot, the Samsung team was sent off into the grass to retrieve the phones.

Amongst the older phones donated for recycling today were these two ancient Blackberries.

Telus is offering the Samsung Instinct for $130 with a three-year contract, $230 for two-years, $350 for one-year, and $400 without a contract.
