The Canadian iTunes Music Store has launched two new sections today. iTunes U is a collection of free course lectures, lab demonstrations, and language lessons from top American universities and colleges. iTunes Plus is the first collection of DRM-Free music to be offered by Apple, meaning that the song files come with no restrictions as to what mp3 player you can use them with. Both of the new sections can be accessed from the front page of the iTunes store. The free courses offered through iTunes U include both videos as well as audio and many offer a subscription option where your computer will automatically download the latest course files and transfer them to your iPod on the next sync as they become available. Campuses that are participating include Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Duke University and MIT. Subjects range from Brain and Cognitive Sciences to Global Affairs to books for Kindgeraten students and above. For its first offerings of DRM-Free Music, Apple is offering music from record label EMI which includes Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Joss Stone,Pink Floyd, John Coltrane and Paul McCartney's solo work. Each song in the iTunes Plus section is $1.39 CND and in addition to have no restrictions applied, the files themselves are 256 kbps AAC, meaning the sound quality is better than the regular catalog (which is 128 kbps). If you already own many of the songs featured in the iTunes Plus catalog, there's an upgrade button you can click which will automatically search yor library of purchased music and replace any DRM files you have with DRM-Free files if available. The goal for Apple is to convince more record labels to allow their music to be converted over into the iTunes Plus format and according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, they plan to have more than half of their store converted over by the end of this year.
