After the success of our first collaboration, Fitness Expert Libby Norris and I have teamed up once again to take a look at more great fitness websites. She reviews their value in enhancing your workout, while I review their use of the internet and the latest Web 2.0 trends. From beginners to professional, yoga to exercises for kids, here’s our six selections.

Here you’ll find the most comprehensive source for workout plans. It includes a calendar, journal, interactive instructions, a library of fitness articles, and an exercise encyclopedia. You can have a plan created that include equipment or none if you like, and although there’s a $10 per month subscription fee, it includes e-mail or phone support from a trainer. The workouts you generate can be either printed out or transferred over to a Windows Mobile Device.

Designed for kids at schools, but can also work individually as well, this web-based motivation journal offers a wide range of activities for kids to track each day, it even includes performing household chores and playing the Nintendo Wii. A points and trophy system is designed to offer a fun source of motivation.

iTrainer

This Australia-based service creates MP3-based workouts for you to download and listen to on your digital music player while you workout. Professional trainers build a program that includes their audio instruction with the best of today’s music, all tied into an interactive calendar and journal to track your progress. Can by synched to iTuens for automatic download and they offer a reminder service where you can have an SMS message or a phone call made to you just before your scheduled workout to help motivate. This is a great program for those working out at home or at the club on their own and although there’s a subscription fee, it’s a small investment.

Vancouver-based service that offers DVD-quality instructional videos for a wide range of exercises from Yoga for various levels of difficulty, to Pilates, to exercises designed for the office. The videos and audio guides require a monthly fee, but there’s plenty of free content as well. You’ll find articles, a blog, a yoga position guide, and music downloads.

Here you can take your workout routine and transform it into a competitive sport. You can your friends can create your own league, with each of you creating your own baseball card-like profile and recording your exercises to provide stats for comparison between you and the other players. As you enter in your details, you’ll find that you can unlock trophies and high scores, both for your own individual achievements as well as through the league you belong to. It’s absolutely free and a great source of fitness comraderie.

Jim Jones’ online workout generator is designed for beginner looking for a simple, simple, application, one that’s not steeped in fitness culture, that helps you gauge your fitness level with simple questions. Can you carry a bag of groceries without being winded? After you answer a quick interview, it generates a workout that you can print out and take to the gym. It also includes a simple food tracker, journal, and a section where you can keep notes. Simple. Although it requires a $5 monthly subscription fee, the first week is free to try (no credit card required)
