Joshua Jackson

Rogers has hired Canadian actor Joshua Jackson (Fringe, Dawson's Creek) to run around the city of Toronto next monday as part of a promotional tour for the Tuesday launch of the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, the first smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system to arrive in Canada. Jackson will be traveling about the city throughout the day, hitting five secret locations to meet with fans, hand out free phones, gift cards, and get them to enter for a high seas Caribbean adventure for two worth $4,000. Apparently Jackson will be quite the multi-tasker as he will be maintaining a blog at RogersRevolution.com at the same time that will give hints as to where each location will be, adding both blog posts and photos plus using Google Latitude, Google Search, and Google Maps to let online users track his movements. His first stop is set for 9am on Monday morning, at the Rogers Building at 333 Bloor St. East. He's scheduled to only stay 45 minutes at each location and then move quickly to the next, finishing the run at 2:30 pm.  [More]

Bing home page

Goodbye Windows Live Search or MSN Search, this coming June 3rd in English Canada (Bing.ca) and the United States (Bing.com) Microsoft will replace their search engine with a new one called Bing. French Canada and Europe will still have access to Bing, but in beta form and without features customized to their location. Bing’s focus will be on offering assistance with the most common searches involving travel, health, shopping, and local search. When people search for a hotel, for example, they want more than just the hotel’s website and so the goal is to package all of the additional information most people want into the first set of results from their first search query. With these popular categories, Microsoft is trying to reduce the number of times you have to use a search engine to get what you’re looking for. [More]

The Scene of the Crime

You can't leave the room, not because you're trapped. You're a detective, someone has been murdered, and you can't leave until you figure out who did it. From Submachine creator Mateusz Skutnik, The Scene of the Crime is a fantastic twist on the genre, allowing you to search the room for clues using finger print dusting powder and adhesive tape to lift the results. You have a journal that records notes and the ability to match prints and samples found amongst the disturbed belongings of the victim. What happened here? What was the motive? Rain splashes against the window as lightning flashes against the dark night. Watch the progress bar in your journal to see how close you are to having the solution and good luck.  [More]

The ROM's Bug Room

Last week the Royal Ontario Museum added a webcam to their infamous “Bug Room”, a special chamber filled with flesh-eating insects, used by the institution’s staff to clean the bones of newly acquired specimens. For decades the special preparation area has remained off limits, part of the ROM’s hidden secrets and behind-the-scenes workings, but now as part of their new initiative to use digital technologies to deliver greater access to the museum’s resources, those with a strong stomach and a scientific curiosity can monitor the progress of the bugs online and over time, witnessing the emergence of a clean skeleton from a moving mass of crawling beetles. (WARNING: This post contains a YouTube video and a link to a webcam that contain scenes of a graphic nature. Viewer discretion before continuing is advised). [More]

”ZuneMicrosoft's digital media player business will see two major changes this year. The first will be the addition of a Zune section to Xbox Live, their online network for the Xbox 360, a move the company says will allow the two devices two exchange video content, but also one that will expose and create better awareness to their large community of video game players. The update to Xbox Live to offer this connection will be available to all of the network's international markets. The same cannot be said for the Zune HD, an updated version of the digital media player that includes the ability to output HD video to a television and a built-in HD radio receiver. For now, the company plans to only offer the Zune HD in the United States, with plans for a fall release. [More]

The LEGO designers at NeXTSTORM have really pushed their craft with their latest piece, an automated theatre displaying a pirate adventure. What you're looking at in the video below is not a form of still animation or puppetry, but programmed movements accomplished using LEGO's Mindstorm and NXT robotics sets. A shark leaps out of the water, boats collide and fire cannons, it's quite a stunning achievement. Make sure to watch right to the end to see the reveal of the mechanics behind. You can see more of their creations, including a bionicle head, thermometer, and cyclebike at their online video vault.

”HTCI’ve been testing Rogers’ latest prototype build of the HTC Dream smartphone running Google’s Android operating system and, as you’d expect so close to its June 2nd launch, it’s near complete. The only tweaking left is to its support for Active Sync, a feature missing from the phone’s launch in the US, one that allows for better access to work e-mail accounts. [More]

This morning on Canada AM we featured a selection of video clips shot by our hosts Bev, Marci, Jeff, and myself as part of my review of the Flip UltraHD and Flip MinoHD camcorders launching this week. Here's the full version of my own assignment video, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Ontario Museum's private Ornithology collection courtesy of Brad Millen who handles the department's Database Prep. This was completely shot, edited, and uploaded using the Flip's own software. Those of you who follow me on Twitter know I was at the museum this past Friday, tweeting photos of their live animals on display on their sidewalk. Now you know what I was really up to. I will be posting more details on my visit to ROM later this week including a better version of this video, a second video showcasing a harrowing visit to the museum's infamous "Bug Room" and articles with details on the collection and the specimens included in the footage.

Flip MinoHD

It is a very difficult task to take a gadget like the Flip Camcorder, which is celebrated for its low price tag and simplistic use and evolve it, to add enhancements and improvements without crossing the line that separates it from all the other camcorders on the market. With their latest generation Pure Digital has managed to keep that balance, introducing new HD models that are slightly more expensive, offering better video quality and a few stylish tricks while still maintaining the same simple shooting controls and quick USB connection to a home computer.
