”DeepThe difficulty runs fairly high this week as Deep Chalk and Deep Chalk Second Phase are both surreal point-and-click adventures that offer puzzles that can be both direction-less and incoherent. Both games offer a mood and soundscape that make it worth the visit, and there are animated sequences that can make getting through the obscure challenges rewarding, but often the puzzles are based on little logic and require you to move your mouse over the right spots rather than clicking on them. In the game you play a kind of crystal object, an energy with no physical form. Part of the challenge is to understand how that energy can be used and operated within the Deep Chalk world. First time visitors will easily give up and should check out the other No Escape puzzle games in this section of my blog, while veterans will no doubt take on the challenge and push through. Good luck. [More]

”SoundThe BBC has launched a new online service that displays a list of the top musical acts being written about and discussed on the internet. The Sound Index crawls a list fo the biggest music sites on the internet - iTunes, Bebo, MySpace, Google, Last.FM, and YouTube - and collects data from these sites as to which musical acts are being discussed, played, downloaded, watched, and uses this information to create an index listing the most popular bands according to online activity. The index is updated every six hours and can be tweaked to display the information through your own personal filters. You can choose to have it display only the type of music you like or to rebuild its index based on a select number of web-sources or by using information supplied by web users of a specific age or location (where that data is made available). ”Shaun There are three things I'd like to share with you about Wii Fit this week. Since it is sold out and everyone has been asking me how to get a copy, I put the question to Nintendo Canada and this is their advice: "Nintendo is shipping product every week. As far as the "best place to buy" goes, that will depend on a lot of factors, so I can't give you a firm response on that! Individual retailers will handle their product differently, but the best places to go would include the "big box" stores such as [More]

”GoogleA quick recap: Google Maps is the one where you can scroll across satellite maps of the planet while Google Earth is the full simulation of the planet where you can flay through the stratosphere, from one point to another and access neat overlays that give you guided tours. Up until today, Google Maps was the one that you could easily access with your web browser while Google Earth was the piece of software that you had to download and install and hope that your computer was powerful enough to handle it. Well, that's changed as Google has now released the Google Earth Web Broswer Pulg-in. This also means that web sites can now add Google Earth visuals to their services and already there's a few who have done just that.. [More]

”FirefoxAs they prepare to launch a new version of their popular web browser, Firefox has decided to make the attempt at setting a new Guinness World Record for the "most software downloads in 24 hours". To do this means recruiting web users such as yourself to their cause and so they have created a FireFox 3 Download Day where you can sign up to pledge to help. When they post the official launch date for FireFox 3 (as yet to be announced),they ask that you return to the site and download the new web browser for the record. They have a map on their site which shows the number of pledges made by country and so far there haven't been nearly as many made from Canada as I'd expected. [More]

”Bell While there are several online video stores and services in Canada, the BellVideoStore.ca is the first to offer Hollywood movies, both for rental and purchase, as a download to your PC computer and a selection of portable devices. The catalog right now is limited to titles from Paramount, Maple Pictures, and Corus, but it includes new releases such as “There Will Be Blood”, “Sweeny Todd”, and “Cloverfield”. Having tried out both the rental and purchase program, I think the first and most important thing I can tell you about the Bell Video Store is that it is designed around Microsoft’s Digital Rights Management software and so suffers from all of the glitches, complications, and head-scratching [More]

”Chronotron"A puzzling, mind-bending platform game, Chronotron stars a time-traveling robot who must hunt down missing circuits to complete a time loop error in his time machine. Not only can you rewind and fast-forward your movements within each level, but you can use your time machine to create duplicate copies of yourself to perform complex tasks. If there's a door that needs to be opened with a switch, throw the switch and then travel back in time, and while your previous self hits the switch, your current self can walk through the door. As the levels continue, this puzzle dynamic gets more complex, but don't worry there's a walkthrough offered with the game itself. [More]

”MedicalA "Jack Bauer" is a doctor who works past 24 hours while a radiologist is often referred to as a "Blinky the Fish" after the three-eyed fish on The Simpsons. If you ever hear the hospital page "Doctor Blue" to a room, it means there's a room where the staff are baffled and would like anyone on the medical staff to come and offer an opinion. To deal with the grim reality and intense pressures of healthcare, medical staff have developed an extensive library of witty slang designed to keep things light-hearted and easier to cope with. You'll find an extensive list of medical slang here. [More]
